Now that it’s coming to an end, I started to think about the February vacation and where it came from. Did you know that we didn’t always have a February break? Way back when , we just got a day off for Lincoln’s birthday and a day off for Washington’s birthday. During the energy crisis, I think in the 1970s, it was decided that closing schools for a week in February, traditionally the coldest and snowiest month of the year, would save a tremendous amount of heating fuel
and money for schools. Wrapping the vacation around the Presidential birthdays was convenient, and I’m sure gave the stores a good reason to run sales. A win-win situation.
You might be interested to know that there are schools in the last few years that have decided to do away with the February vacation break, because they believed breaking up the school year so soon after the December vacation was not helpful to students, who they felt would forget too much of what they learned by this interruption.
What do you think about this? Do you feel that we should get rid of the February vacation to help you learn more (and maybe end school a little bit earlier) or do you think we should keep things just as they are? Remember to explain WHY you feel the way you do.

well i think that we should keep the february break because some kids like i need a break off from all the commotion in school. We shouldn’t stay in school, we should keep the break because of our freedom. Second of all some kids in my school need to spend time with their family and long lost realitives.Would you like it if your realitives come and you want to spend more time with them and you have to go to school? I THINK NOT!

Basiclly what you other children mean is that you want to study more in school. Well i respect that and i want to pass the math test to but don’t you want time away from school for once. School isn’t always good with the fighting, bad language and inappropriate behavior. I technactly feel mad/ angry we have to stay in school. I DO NOT think school should be ended earlier but that at least we get weeks (during further times of the school year)of vacation instead of school all year. You teachers may think school is all great but you to have problems and not just us. So si back, relax and think about what i am trying to say.

I really enjoyed reading your arguments for and against the February break. I personally happen to be in favor of the break because it gives me the opportunity to visit my mother in the sunny and warm state of Florida.
